We got back from the funeral tonight about 7:30. The funeral was Thursday, not Friday. (Give a third shifter a 4 day weekend and they don't know what day of the week it is.)
When we left the church, we were surprised. Freedom Riders lined the sidewalk on both sides saluting the casket as it passed. Their bikes each with a flag flying on it, escorted the hearse to the cemetery. Some rode in front of the hearse and some rode behind it. These people are all vets and usually protect families of fallen soldiers from hecklers opposing the war. My sister-in-law told me that this is just something they do back home to honor all vets. It was a full military funeral with military casket bearers. The Freedom Riders also lined the road to the grave as we passed by. These "Riders" are bikers and they looked the part. Jeans, boots, beards and bandannas. Sounds weird? It wasn't. It was a very impressive and touching experience.
The police department in Norfolk is terrific. I don't know how many cars were at Uncle Myron's funeral, but there were at least 6 patrol cars at Harley's. All we had to do was half a block to HWY. 81 and then a few short blocks to the cemetery. The head patrol car goes straight down the middle of the highway and the procession is to do the same. No other cars can interfere or pass the procession. The officers with their cars parked across the lanes were all out, standing at attention and saluting until the procession passed.
We went straight to Aunt Eva's when we got into town. She was home alone and we had a nice talk. She was taking it pretty hard. Not a good time for her to be alone. She told us she is thinking of going to a nursing home, but can't make any big decisions until she has calmed down from this. I do hope she decides to go to one. She just isn't well enough to live alone and Rose can't really help her now. Rose has too much going on trying to help Sonja .
It was a long day and we are glad we are home.
