Thanksgiving
My job,as always, was to stuff the bird and get it in the oven. It was about 6:00 AM and Bob was up to help me. I like to have him hold the bird up on its neck while I stuff the bird.
Just as I was almost ready, Riley and Shannon came down. Riley came right up and looked into the "cavity". He wanted to know what I was going to do. I told him and started stuffing the bird. I wasn't even half way done when Shannon (with VERY big eyes) said, "I'm not eating any of that" !!!!!
We all sat down to a very nice dinner, and true to his word, I couldn't get Shannon to take a bite of dressing. I conned and coaxed but he was adamant. He was not eating that "STUFF" from where it came from.
Just more for the rest of us !
Hostile Work Environment
Men. (What 2 people in my department think they are.) Because I try to keep my language and comments in the general area of family conversation, I will not put into words what I think they are.
When they heard I bumped into the department, they made it known to many that they were going to see to it that I didn't qualify. If that were to happen, I would be out the door with no job.
One of them was to train me on third shift no less. I finally went to the Union Hall and said I would not, could not let him train me. I went to first shift where I had 2 great guys training me.
I almost made myself sick each day having to go to work. I quit eating and got very little sleep. The stress of being afraid I would run into one of them and wether or not I could physically do the job was getting to me. I would come home from work and actually start counting the hours until I would have to go back to work.
I started thinking about what I would need to do to get a job outside of the plant. First I would need 2 good feet. I saw a surgeon and on Dec.13 I had surgery on my right foot.
I will be out on hospital pass for eight weeks. Then my left foot. Eight more weeks.
Maybe my seniorty won't hold that _ _ _ _ job when I get back.
I hope.

SER, MES, PRT
There was very very very ugliest, very very ugliest and very ugliest to chose from.
Ser,Mes Prt. According to some, comes in at a mere very ugliest. (Depends if you talk to a man or woman.)
Service long V's: A healthy strong man would say, "go for it". Any woman in her right mind ( and most men) would say, "Don't even try".
Cure, blah, blah something long V's: A woman would say, " Forget it". A man would say, "Go for it". A lot of "butt" time. Loooong cure times. But.... There are five presses to run, three panels on three of the machines are the same and the other two machines have panels different. Hot. Dirty. Long reaches into hot molds to place the belts. Burns. If you build and cure slabs as opposed to belts, can be very heavy!
Ser, Mes Prt: The poll on this one is about 50 - 50 between men and women. Since I had no choice in the matter, I took it. I heard it is building and curing big belts. (Non automotive) Machinery type. Again, hot, heavy and nothing to look forward to. The only plus is, (and a lot of you won't understand), 3T3rd. I will train on third and hold third shift. The important thing to remember is, if it is a very physical job, hard, dirty and hot, do it on THIRD shift!!! Come June, July and August it will mean a slight difference in the temperature on the shift you can hold. Example: Second shift could be 120 degrees in the plant, first could be 115 degrees, and third could be 110. When you go outside for breaks, you won't have that sun beating down on you. You might even catch a slight breeze. Since I have spent the last 5 summers in the plant out of the heat, it could be very important !!!
Ser, Mes Prt: My new job. I go to on third shift Sunday night at 11:00. In layman terms.. Transmission.
Francie
One of those "really nice" people you are so glad to have known.
My sympathy goes out to his wife Rose, their children and to the rest of his extended family.
Foot, Teeth And --------
Gotta love it.
Forget Auto Zone replacement parts. Forget Car Quest replacement parts. Forget all those other big name replacement part centers for "things".
I need a body parts center for just that ------ BODY PARTS. In fact, I think you could include Bob and a few of you other readers out there.
Anybody have an address, phone number or web site for me ???????

Survived !!!
Total crying time for Peyton ??? Less than 10 minutes. The first time he was just tired and crabby. Picked him up and cuddled for a couple of minutes and he was out. Only slept for thirty minutes . Wish I had had my play pen set up and I think he would have had a decent nap. Still woke up in a good mood.
The second time was later when he just decided he could take what Damien was playing with and not have to share. Grandma said no !!! He threw himself off of the couch and landed on the floor between it and the ottoman. He started screaming. I was careful to make sure he could hear me above his noise, and I said, no problem... Keep on screaming !!! Two or three minutes later after being ignored, he got tired of that and took off to explore. Of course he got into some of Grandma's No Nos, but he hasn't learned what is off limits yet. At least my Jewel Tea didn't get touched !
Soon Mom showed up and he was safe. They didn't stay too long after that as Grandma had to go to bed for her third shift nap.
All in all, I thought it was a successful attempt at breaking him from Mommy's hip. We will keep trying this at various times until maybe, just maybe, he will realize that he can survive without Mom for a few hours.

Our Day
I then rushed to Bob's doctors office and around 11:15 I went in to a little consulting area to hear the doctors instructions with him. All went well and a follow up appointment was made for six weeks. When we finished running our errands, it was almost two when we got home. He felt great and called a few people to tell them. I read for a while and dozed on the couch for a few minutes. I woke at 5:30 and found him laying down on the bed. The back ache was back. He went to the living room, and when I got up at 8;30 he was laying on the couch and in pain. He had taken 2 Tylenol with no results. I told him to call his doctor as they had told him they took calls 24/7. He didn't argue, so you know he was miserable. The doctor said maybe it was spasms and called in a prescription for pain pills and told him to try a heating pad. If still hurting in the morning to call again. He took the pain pills and used the heating pad.
About 9:15 his friendly "Roto Rooter" from Georgia called to check on his progress. Bob didn't even feel like joking with him. Now really !! All of you who know Bob, know he must have been miserable !!
When I left for work, he thought he was feeling better. At 7:30 this morning when I got home from work he was definitely better, but the back ache is not gone. I don't know what the day will bring.
I got to work and at 11:00 we had our "safety huddle". Some nonsense the company insists on. It is also a time when announcements are made.
We were told they are surplussing 8 people in the department. Lack of work. Of course, that includes me. No job. I will go in next Wednesday morning to see what job in the plant my seniority will hold. This could be very UGLY.........
If anyone thinks this was a good day, I would hate to see what a bad day is.

Simple Procedure
Don't leave Mom alone while Dad has a "simple procedure". She says, "Should Kellie be there with you" ? Then I got to remembering the last "simple procedure".
Then I got paranoid. Maybe I did need to be there !! But, there is a problem. His "simple procedure" is at 10:00 and I will just be getting out of the dentists chair at that time.
Bob's solution: Keep cell phone on during the entire dental procedure and he will call me if he needs me. Right !!!!!!!
I think back three weeks ago to that "simple procedure". If Bob had needed me, he could not have called me. Had I not been there, he would have been alone.
Bobbie's solution: My appointment is at 9:00. I will be there at 8:30 and urge them to get me done as soon as possible. I will go to Bob's doctors office and wait in the waiting room. Again...... It doesn't matter if I am alone. It only matters that he knows I am there. Other family members can't always be there. Not everybody waiting can have someone there for them at each occasion. If I should need any of the kids, I will just hand the phone to ANYBODY around me and tell them who I need. I am confident that I wouldn't have a problem getting help. Wish I would have thought of it back then. In thinking back, I am shocked that one of those nurses blocking me from Bob's room, didn't offer to help me as I was fumbling with my phone. That would be the only complaint I would have had with the Heart Institute.
Sooooo. (And not necessarily in the correct order.) My itenerary.
# 1. Bobbies dentist appointment (Hate them with a passion.)
#2 . Bob's "simple procedure".
Could be a long morning.

Sick Day
I came home from work yesterday morning, kicked off my shoes and saw these two smaller shoes in "my" place. I said, "Who is in my house" !! Spence came around the corner.
He has had the flu on and off since around Friday morning at 4:00AM. He was up early again Monday morning visiting the bathroom. That is when Kellie thought maybe school was not a good idea.
Grandma's house! He felt fine and played as normal. Then Uncle Casey came home and talked him into Pizza for breakfast. I had my doubts. But... Figured I would let his tummy make that call. He ate almost a whole small frozen pizza and drank a small glass of milk. He played his games and kept himself pretty occupied. I fell asleep about 10:30 and woke up at 12:30.
He was gone. We had had several calls during the morning from both parents and told them there was no further "trips". "Dad "called sometime after I fell asleep and the decision was made for Spence to make his afternoon classes. I was pretty sure he would be fine.
Guess he did fine, as I never heard any different............

Game Day Sights
These are pictures taken at the game the weekend my neice Lee and her husband Jim came down. I know there are one or two duplicates, but no way am I going to try to figure out how to delete them !!
It was actually a beautiful day for October. I had five layers on and Lee brought a blanket to wrap my legs in. At halftime Jim wrapped his coat around me and I was good to stay. Not too bad!!!
The one picture I might need to explain is the fly over. We knew it was coming but not when. They were here before I heard them. Gone before I could react. This is my picture. I didn't even come close. Still the memory is wonderful !! At half time the pilotes were introduced to the croud. The stadium erupted !!!
Final score??
NU - 32
BU - 20
Just a great day !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stayin Alive
I always liked this song and liked the beat. Never once would have thought of it in this context. But.... Just think of the title and then think of the events of 10-10 . I never knew. Two breaths and 30 compressions. I always have heard of breaths and compressions. Just never heard any numbers that stuck with me.
If I should ever need the knowledge to do what is needed, I will forever remember, "Stayin Alive". Please go to this web site. Read it. See the video.
It may make the "difference" some day...................
http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/10/16/disco.song.health.ap/index.html
I think the Bee Gees were more my generation than Kellie's. Could be wrong. Don't remember when they came out. Guess "Disco" would be more hers than mine. Think I am probably more "Oldies". Thought I would say that before somebody else did. Just know I remember the song. Always liked them. Still like them. But, that is not the point.
I may even remember 2 breaths, thirty compressions. Put those numbers permanently in my mind. And remember....
"Stayin Alive"
Leanne & Jim
I meant to come home this morning and get started on house cleaning. I am just too darn tired. That means I will have it all to do in the morning.
After Bob's episode, the doctor ( a man I might add) gave him his instructions for the next few weeks. No heavy lifting, blah, blah and no vacuuming. I almost came out of my chair !!! What???? That is his chore !! ( What possible harm could there be in vacuuming? ) He did amend it to right hand only. BUT. In the morning I think when I bring it up, Bob will only remember the no vacuuming part. Thank GOD he didn't say no dusting !!! Come to think of it. He didn't say no bathrooms either. Looking better by the minute.
Colleen did tell me this week that Riley has started vacuuming for her. Only problem is, there isn't time to get him here before Leanne comes.
Now that I am really planning my day, I don't remember the doctor saying no folding clothes. No scrubbing the kitchen floor. No making beds.
My day really is looking better !!
Oct 22, 2008
Dan
Mom and Dad are thinking of you.
Rain
A real thunder storm. It was so loud I could even hear it upstairs over the noise of a vacuum cleaner. That means loud. It even woke Bob during the night and he swears a house in the neighborhood must have been hit by lightning. Says he could see a big red ball of fire through the bedroom shades.
Rain today, snow tomorrow. Not much to look forward to there.
This past two weeks have been sooo stressful at work. Then there was the events of 10-10 (Bob's ordeal). I just couldn't bring myself to phone home and find out if we had water in the basement. Didn't even want to know until I couldn't avoid it anymore.
I finally got home. The test. Kick off work shoes and walk all over the basement in socks.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO WATER !!!!!
My New Department
Since I am considered previously qualified I "have" to go to the shift I can hold to train. Here comes third shift Sunday night! I am glad but need to say I am nervous.
There has been a lot of discontentment in this department. It is over one of the Lead Hands. It went to her head. She has become a tyrant. My bumping in will put her bottom in the department and the next one bumped out. She is also the labor trainer and the stories coming out of there aren't pretty.
Hope I get trained properly......

Happy Birthday !!!!!
Love you, Mom
P.S. Please disregard any comments you know who might leave.
First Shifters !!!!!
Two weeks ago I was promised 3rd shift, doing my same job for two weeks only and then I would go in to pick (or be given ) a new job.
This is the second week.
Then 1st shift got it in their head to start this offering a voluntary layoff thing all over again. I went into work yesterday and was told I was going to have to stay on the job, go to 2nd shift and the job would be a combination of all the terrible jobs I have turned down on Saturday overtime !!!!
I went to the union hall and explained my side of the story and what was said when I agreed to stay another two weeks. The president said he was probably part of the cause of the problem because he had forgotten the agreement that was made at the time. He told me to go home and get some sleep (fat chance) and he would "fix" it.
Last night at 12:50 am., my lead hand was still telling me, "You will go to 2nd shift "Dearie", with bells on". Number One: I absolutely hate men who call women "Dearie". Number Two: I knew the idiot didn't know what he was talking about. I just left and went to break. No point in talking to an idiot. (Believe me !! There would have been no bells either!!!)
Twenty minutes later he found me and threw a print out at me. He said, "It is official "Dearie". It was the surplus notice for the week. I am #3 on the list. I do not have to stay!! No second shift !! No terrible job!!
Yet.
Who knows what tomorrow will bring...... I just know I go in at 8:50 in the morning for a job. I will go to the union hall after work and see if they have a "bottom man in the plant" list. I will have two choices. Previously qualified or bottom man. By a technicality I am considered previously qualified in positive drive. I know nothing about anything in this department. The reason I am considered "qualified" is because when white bands became obsolete, what little was left of this department was absorbed into PD. Being qualified in white bands then made me qualified in PD. (Positive Drive.) This actually would not be a bad place to go. They are building a new area for this department and will be moving in the next few months. It is called environmentally friendly. Meaning. AIR CONDITIONED !!!!! Why would I go anywhere else ??
Bad thing is. I can hold 3rd shift in PD for now but I will have to train on 1st shift. It is a 14 week training period. Will be a long 14 weeks !!!
I have paid union dues for almost 22 years and this is only the third or fourth time I have needed union representation. Kind of expensive, but well worth the money in this instance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kellie's Birthday
Just a popular place with us. Too much of everything that appeals to almost all age groups.
The kids really enjoy it. They get a sack with crayons and things to color when they go in. They can also grab an etch-a-sketch to take to the table to play with. (Never needed if Uncle Casey is there.) On the way out they can go to the cash register and get a token to play in one of their games. Only pays out if you put it in the gum ball machine. (Grandma's opinion.)
Grandpa got emotional and I think it was because all of those living close were there, and he came soooo close to missing this occasion.
It was a beautiful day !!!
OHHHHHHHH
I am so upset I don't know if I want to laugh, scream or cry.

Heart
I saw this on the Internet this morning and it got me to thinking about last Friday's events. What caused it and what might have prevented it.
CAUSE: From the doctors, all I can get is "some kind of backup" failed. They don't even want to refer to it as "cardiac arrest". They prefer the term "chest procedure".
Prevention: Do you suppose a "Republican" heart is the answer? Deaf to the country's outcries? Dumb to what is going on? Blind to the economy?
Deaf, dumb and blind. The worst case scenario of handicapped.
Hmmm.

World Financial Crisis - Japan
Following the problems in the financial sector in the US, uncertainty has now hit Japan.
In the last 7 days the Origami Bank has folded, the Sumo Bank has gone belly up and the Bonsai Bank announced plans to cut some of its branches.
Yesterday, it was announced that the Karaoke Bank is up for sale and will likely go for a song, while today's shares in the Kamikaze Bank were suspended after they nose-dived. While Samurai Bank is soldiering on following sharp cuts, the Ninja Bank is reported to have taken a hit, but they remain in the black. Furthermore, 500 staff at Karate Bank got the chop and analysts report that there is something fishy going on at the Sushi Bank where it is feared that staff may get a raw deal.

Old News
Simple procedure.... I think back to Sheila and those words came to mind. When Sheila died we could not understand WHY. I have a better understanding now. When those in the medical profession use this term, and it has become "standard terminology", we are programed to accept, give consent and "assume" all will be well. We forget, and so do the medical professionals, that life is very fragile. Each and every "procedure" is unique to that particular patient and I think the terminology " simple procedure" should be banned. The odds of what happened to Bob were less than 1/2 of 1 %. Less than that because he had had this procedure before. But... It happens. And if it happens to you or yours, then it is not so simple. It can be devastating and/or very frightening.
I will attempt to tell you the days events as I lived them.
We arrived early for the heart cath. and everything proceeded as normal. They brought him back to his room and I saw the doctor. There were no blockages and they decided to go ahead and do 2 routine procedures. The first one was a test to check the heart for blood clots. The next was to shock the heart back into it's normal rhythm if there were no clots. I was with him while they hooked him up for the procedures. When they were finished, a nurse walked me a short distance down the hall to a waiting room. Both "procedures" were to take about 10 minutes. Combined time. I saw a computer, and quickly blogged that all was well and we would be going home soon. Two short sentences. I got up, walked to a chair and began to sit down. I hadn't even crossed my legs yet or sat my purse on the floor when I heard the page. ATTENTION ALL PERSONNEL.... CODE BLUE .... ROOM 20 and before they said 8, I was running. How does a person know??? I can't answer that. I knew. I hit the end of the aisle, and was stopped by three people blocking me from his room. I could only stand there hanging onto the wall. The shade to the window in his room was dropped immediately. I watched people running in and out with different supplies. It was a constant effort on their part to block any view I had of what was going on in there. I was offered a chair 3 times, each further away from his doorway. I would not move. When the door would be opened, they would pull the curtain as much as they could so I couldn't see.. Didn't work. The first few minutes I couldn't see Bob but I saw so many people. Silly reaction I can't explain. I counted them. Quit counting at 20. I turned to the nurses station and there were 8 more ready there. Then those three keeping me from him. I turned back to his room and for a brief moment everyone cleared and I saw Bob. Head and arm off one side of the bed, foot off the other side. Doctor calling for more IVs. Scared !!!! I needed to call somebody. I got my cell phone and I couldn't make it work. Mind and fingers just weren't working together. I was shaking so hard. I finally got Denny. Kellie was on her way.
By the time she got there, they had brought him around and I was with him. The room was a disaster !! Paper from IV kits, rubber gloves, syringe caps, you name it and it was thrown on the floor as they had used it. Empty syringes, full syringes and vials of drugs were on the cabinet. Bob's monitor was going off constantly. Either blood pressure or heart rate. Kellie was shocked. She said, "Jezz Dad, you are going off faster than the stock market".....
Another doctor was called and he was scheduled for a pacemaker as soon as a lab opened up. It wasn't long and they took him to surgery. Kellie and I had another hour and a half to kill waiting for a "simple" procedure. He came back. It was over. It was soooooo quiet. His monitor didn't go off. Casey came. Bob began to understand what had happened. The kids left about 9:00.
Bob went to sleep. The nurses made up a "bed" for me. Too uncomfortable. I wandered the parking lot. There is nobody to talk to at 2:00 AM !! I went back inside. He got to take a short walk with a nurse while I followed at 3:00 AM. Then he and I took a long walk at 5:00. We were pretty much awake after that. Colleen got in from Michigan during the night and grabbed a short nap at Kellie's before they all came out.
We got him home about 3:00 Saturday afternoon. Time to check out the old heart and new pacemaker. Husker football. Overtime !!!!! Nebraska football team lost but the pacemaker won. Notta problem.
Colleen left for home Sunday afternoon about 1:00 and we left for Norfolk about 1:30 for Aunt Eva's funeral. Can you believe, after all that happened, the doctors said he could travel????
Bob looks and feels great. He had no pain, no fear or any other of our human emotions. I on the other hand, look like I have aged 5 years.
All of this from a simple procedure............
For those of you who do not read my quotes, I will include this one in my post.
"Prayers go up and blessings come down. Unknown.

Code Blue
Mom said she was in the waiting room when she heard...All Personnel... Code Blue Room.. She was up and heard 2.....0...... and was running before they said 8. They wouldn't let her in the room, and she said there were about 20 medical people in there working on him for what seemed like an eternity.
Shortly thereafter, they took him into surgery to get a pacemaker.
We are blessed that they were able to resuscitate him. He seems fine now, and all medical personnel that I've asked "Will this happen again?" have all reassured me that the pacemaker should prevent it from happening again. I am asking every person that comes into the room with a uniform on this question.
However, mom had the scare of her life today, and I don't think she will let him out of her sight for a while.

Flunked
He will have a heart cath. Friday morning at 9:00 am. He has a "shadow" on the bottom part of his heart. It could indicate stress from a blockage or it could be from his heart rate.
If it is not a blockage, we assume at some time they will shock his heart to get it into a normal rhythm.
If it is a blockage???
We will know more sometime Friday.
Will let you know as we know.
Job
Thursday afternoon at 2:45 pm the decision to cut 5 was made. By Friday morning at 6:15 it was cut to 4 and made official.
Yesterday morning at 11:15 am I had a message to call work regarding my surplus. Somebody, somewhere, decided that 4 people in one day was too much of a shock to the department. So..... They were only going to surplus 2 this week, and 2 in two weeks.
They started with high seniority on the surplus list and started asking from there. Stay or go. #1 Tony said go. #2 Guy ( his real name) said stay. #3 Bobbie said stay. #4 Connie is forced to go.
Stupidity, most certainly.
For me it was actually nothing short of a miracle. My worst nightmare would have come true. For me bottom man would have been, large build in positive drive. Not a job I could even have hoped to do.
Who knows what the mix will be in two weeks when I go in, but bottom won't be large build in PD.
As Martha would say.
"That's a good thing".
I Shoulda Known
Can you believe I got an e-mail from Carol, and it contained a veiled threat? She says "Okay, I don't want to hear a word on your blog about this". Does that not sound like a threat???
She needs me to send her the instructions on how to comment.
Again.
Said she would write them down this time.
Said she is going to take a computer course at the SENIOR CLUB.
I don't think computer courses will help with her memory problem, but I am entirely too nice of a person to tell her that.
Wish you all could meet her . She is a neat person !!
She just has a memory problem.

Stock Market
Please review in particular any holdings you might have in the following stocks:
American Can, Interstate Water, National Gas Company and Northern Tissue Company.
Due to the present uncertain market conditions, I advise you to sit tight on American Can, hold your Water, and let go of your Gas. You may be interested to know that Northern Tissue touched a new bottom today, and millions were wiped clean.
It's a tough market out there. Be careful !!!!!!!
Up - Date
We had a meeting Friday morning with the plant manager as he felt the "need" to inform us of why this cut back is necessary. He gave us this important tale about the "footprint" of the plant and where we needed to be in area sq. ft.of the plant to actual production sales. Someone said it better than I can. Footprint my _ _ _ !! Sounds like the boot to me !!
I went to the Union Hall this morning to make sure of my options. I was so relieved to find out that three of the scariest jobs were indeed waiveable. Meaning I by pass those and go on to the next low man in the plant. I also got a bit of great news. Due to a bit of good luck ( in this plant?) I am considered qualified in PD final. The job I held before this was being eliminated and PD absorbed it. Combined is the correct word. Those that were qualified in white bands are automatically qualified in PD final. By no means do I know the job. I would be going in without a clue and have to be trained. Just means I am qualified.
I will wait until my turn in the employment office to make up my mind. Bottom man could be great. OR...... It could be my worst nightmare. If I bump PD final, it would more than likely just be a stopping point. I would be second from the bottom and it would only take two previously qualified people to bump me out.
You can almost bet that I would be bumped if I was so fortunate to get it. In the next two months PD is moving to a new area. Environmentally controlled. That means. AIR CONDITIONED !!!!! People in the plant will kill for that.
I wonder if I will even want to go to work Wednesday night (my Thursday night).
SO..... instead of facing only one choice, I now have two. Bottom man or PD for however long it might last.
Carol
Darn.... I was just thinking about her and had a good story to tell on her because I thought she had quit watching.
Think I will save it fort when I think she has lost me for good. I wonder if she needs me to send the instructions for posting again ??? She never said.
Birthday
On September 27th we celebrated Casey's 40th birthday. I don't know where all those years went !! Kellie's and Dan's came over, along with another couple and their children who are good friends of Casey's.
It was Valentinoes pizza, drinks and football. The pizza was great !! The football was NOT so great.
Did you notice the head gear in the pictures? Do I need to mention that neither one was worn past the picture taking ??????
It was also a sleep over for Damien and Raidyn. Again I made a big bed in the middle of the living room floor, put in one of their favorite DVDs and went down to my computer while they fell asleep. I should be so lucky !!! Six viewings later, I started the 7th and fell asleep on the couch. The last time I looked at the clock it was 2:00AM. I have no idea what time they went to sleep.
At 7:30AM our time, Shannon called from Germany to talk football. You guessed it !! It woke them up right away. I was barely able to have a conversation with her as they both wanted to know what I was going to fix them for breakfast. Cold cereal (same stuff they have at home) is more exciting at Grandma's than at home. I made it until 9:30 when I had to call Mom to come and get them.. I was so tired, but they were like that little bunny. They just kept going and going and going and going.

Just Depressing
Two weeks ago we had a population of 412 people in production on the floor. Down from 1,800 + 22 years ago. Last week they announced big cuts. We will probably go to, or below 300. Almost every department is going to take a "hit". Mine too. Rumor has it, anywhere from 2 to 5 people, which will cut me. Time to go job shopping. I only have 2 choices. Bottom man in the plant or previously qualified. Since all the jobs I am previously qualified on are in Mexico, and I don't speak Spanish, my choices are very limited. It will be the luck of the draw when I go in for a job.
Went to one of our local funeral homes this morning to pay my last respects to an awesome older gentleman. He was a security guard at Goodyear for the last few years and passed away Saturday. Cancer. Spread everywhere. He was 76 years old, and believe it or not, he quit less than 2 weeks ago. You might say he worked right up until the end. I will miss him.

Carol, Does Exist
She told me she was having trouble posting a comment. So........... I sent her detailed instructions. Then I thought.. Maybe not detailed enough. So I sent more. What ever. She ain't too bad , so cut her some slack. So far I am proud of you girls. LOL.
After all, she and her hubby got up at an un-godly hour, drove to our motel and took us to the air port in Orlando. She can't be that bad, right??
Miss you Carol.. Can't wait for our next phone call. I'm sure my ears will be RED.....
Or hurting.

Bad Night
I read for a while, trying to get back to sleep. After a while, I put the book down and thought I would try to sleep. Then, (sixth sense?) I felt like I should check on Casey. I knocked on his door and he said "Yes?" I said, "Are you ok?" He answered "ya Mom." I turned to leave but I had a "feeling". I opened his door and turned the light on. I knew right away he was having a reaction, a bad one. Casey has been a diabetic since he was 10 years old. If you don't know anything about a diabetic reaction, it can be very scary. They don't know what they are doing, what they are saying, where they are and they can be incredibly strong. Afterwards they don't remember anything that happened.
I ran for a small glass of water with a large amount of dissolved sugar in it. I fought him for about twenty minutes before I went to get Bob for help. I didn't want to get Bob because I was afraid he would hurt himself fighting with Casey so soon after he had had surgery. By that time, the first try with sugar water was all over me, the wall, the bed and I had scratched Casey with a finger nail while struggling with him.. I got another glass and we both tried to get it down him. It soon seemed like we needed help, and Bob told me to call 911. I did, several times. No glasses. They were upstairs. I think I called 811 or some crazy number. Got glasses and made the call. By that time Casey was on his feet and screaming at me. Blankety, blank blank. He was calling the police he said. He had his cell phone in his hand and was dialing at this time. The 911 operator was listening to everything and told me to get Bob and get out of the house. Help was coming.
Bob went to get dressed and I went outside to the front steps. Me, in what the girls would call my "old lady Jammie's". I was waiting for the ambulance and fire truck. Fire trucks always come with the ambulances here. I could see the flashing lights coming.
Not the ambulance or the fire truck. Two squad cars and five officers piled out, each with a hand on their firearm. I am too stunned to think much about this. They want to know where Casey is and I tell them he is in the basement, but I think he is coming out of it. That is because he was on his feet and screaming when we left him. During a reaction he isn't capable of standing. They all proceed cautiously in the house and down the basement. The fire truck gets here before the ambulance and four para-medics come in the house. At that time the officers come upstairs with Casey and he is almost normal. While the para-medics checked Casey's blood sugar and did an EKG, I saw the officers leave and go back to the basement. Casey checked out ok, with a level of 140 and heart was ok. Ambulance was canceled. Casey signed a waiver that he didn't want to go to the hospital. Finally, all nine of them leave.
Bob and I sat at the kitchen table while Casey kinda went and hid in the basement. He knew we were upset !! As we talked, it dawned on me! I think he did call the police and they had no idea what they were walking in to. I can't imagine what he told them !! They did have their hands on their guns !!!! I also think they went back downstairs and searched for drugs. One thing for sure. They had to have seen enough diabetic supplies to convince them !!!!!
Casey had gone on one of his long bike rides that afternoon and didn't eat enough before he went to bed. Therefore, reaction..
Shattered nerves and worn out, Bob went to bed. I couldn't sleep. I stayed up.
Bad night. Like June said, "Nuf said".

Are Hospitals Safe ?
The care Bob received was terrible, and that is an understatement! Bob had air boots on his legs during and after surgery. They help your circulation and keep clots from forming. After surgery the nurses just forgot about them. I when I finally asked Saturday afternoon, one of the nurses just hesitated and said, "Oh. We'll just take them off." Saturday night during the night, the nurse came in and took Bob's vitals. Routine stuff. When she left she told Bob she would be right back with his antibiotics. She never came back. He had to call her. She forgot. Bob always has a problem with high blood sugar levels after surgery. The doctor left orders for him to have small doses of insulin if his count went over 250. He received a shot at 170 and another shot at 201. The doctor told Bob he wasn't happy about that. We were shocked. Bob also has a problem with low blood oxygen levels after surgery. He just doesn't take deep breaths.. He was on on oxygen the whole time he was in the hospital (supposed to be). If they moved him from the bed to the chair or walked him, most of the time they forgot to put it back on him. After walks they would bring him back to his room, park the IV and leave forgetting to plug it in and take it off battery power.
Fresh ice water almost all the time had to be asked for. When he was finally allowed some solid food, they brought him jello and creamed soup. He had to call the nurse back and try to explain that the doctor did order solid food. She was really kinda nasty when she finally left to get it. If he needed a nurse anytime (and they seldom checked on him if they knew I was there to take care of him) he had to push his call button. No problem. Except the light was always answered at the desk and you had to play 20 questions with them before they took the message. Then it was wait and see how long before the nurse thought your needs were important enough to get her fanny there.
Once. Once he had a nurse there in record time. I had helped him up and he was on his way to the bathroom carrying his catheter bag. The hook he was holding the bag with broke off. Bag hit floor. Urine spreads all over. I tell Bob to stand still and don't move. I pushed call button. Person at desk answers and wants to play 20 questions. I say, "bag broke, urine all over floor and I am afraid Bob will fall". We had a nurse there almost before I had put the controls down. What was really irritating to me was when I would leave for a while. It seemed like every time I passed the desk, there would be from 4 to 8 different people there. They would either be on computers or visiting. Lots of visiting and it didn't sound like it was work related.
Dismissal. That was a nightmare. He got to go home Monday. I was there bright and early so Bob wouldn't have to wait on me. Rotten breakfast. Doctor didn't show. Nasty lunch. Doctor didn't show. I got Bob dressed as there was no nurse to help. Finally around 2:00 the nurse came in and saw Bob was getting upset. She said she would call the doctor and see where he was. The doctor didn't get there until 4:00 and said he could go home.... With a catheter. A nurse put a patch on him and switched the big bag for a tiny traveling catheter. Then she screwed up. She placed the patch too low on his leg so the tube wasn't long enough. Every step he took was uncomfortable, if you guys know what I mean. Then this nurse said Bob's main nurse would be right in with the paperwork and he would be ready to go. I left and brought the truck around to the main door. I waited. Bob didn't come. I waited. I walked around the truck, and looked at those double doors. I got in truck. I looked at floorboard. Then I thought. Would they let him go if I put it in 4 wheel drive and drove through those damn doors to get him? That's when I saw what looked like a nurse walking Bob to the door. She has no idea how lucky she was. It was after 5:00!!! Bob was shaking his head and really mad. There was no have a nice day or nicey goodbyes here. After Bob got in the truck he told me that when nobody came with the papers he finally tried the call button. That is when they told him is nurse went to a meeting (45Min) and would be back. Latter. It was 5:30 before we left the parking lot.
We went to Wendy's and had a sandwich. The large Frosty Bob had didn't even begin to calm Bob down. He was still mad when we got home.
I guess if you go to this hospital, you are your best nurse. Pay attention to what they do (or don't do) and don't be afraid to use that call button and tell them in no uncertain terms what it is you need !!!!
Thursday afternoon finally came and Bob's doctor appointment. The catheter is now gone !!! He is smiling again. Now, in six weeks he will go back to the doctors office and have the stent removed. Then. Maybe then, this will only be a vague bad dream. Maybe.

Confusion
Bob lead me to believe this was a short 1/2 to 1 hour surgery. He also lead me to believe that the doctor would be using natures opening, if you know what I mean. After 2 1/2 hrs. I was really fit to be tied. I finally was told he was still in surgery and things were going well. At 4:15 they put me in a small waiting room and told me the doctor would be right in. Thirty minutes later I was still waiting . Not impressed with the Doctor or the hospital for that matter.
I finally got to see Bob at 6:00 P.M., 5 hours after surgery. Two knee replacements and a heart bypass were faster than this. They did a Left Laparoscopic Robotic Assisted Dismembered Pyeloplasty procedure. It means they poked holes in him, inserted cameras and operated that way. Bob claims they used five holes, but I could only find four. Funny. After knee replacement and bypass surgery they have you up the same day. Now he can't get up for 24 hr. He can have one cup of ice water every 8 hr.
Bob really looked rough when I saw him. His back was bothering him a lot. They think it is from the hard operating table. Otherwise Bob says to tell you he isn't in a lot of pain. ( I say wait 24 hrs. and ask again.) I left a little after 9:00. He was trying to watch the Kansas game but couldn't stay awake for any length of time.
Will post more tomorrow.....

Labor Day Weekend
We left that Friday morning at 9:00AM and went to Grand Island for breakfast. From there we went north and caught HWY 2 headed for Alliance. This route is called the Sand hills Journey. We had information from the Grand Island Tourist Center and we followed the route stopping in all the towns along the way. We even took a driving tour of Halsey National Forest. Beautiful !! But... We don't recommend the family car or van. A high riding 4 wheel drive vehicle is recommended by the forest ranger, and she wasn't kidding. There were places those vehicles would bottom out and not make it. Narrow. Dirt roads and VERY rough. Beautiful... We made it to Alliance about 6:30 or 7:00 and got a room. Then we headed for Carhenge. You will find a larger picture at the bottom of the blog. This is a bored farmers take on Stonehenge in England. It was really neat! I didn't know what to expect, but I loved it. Bob had seen it before.
The next morning we headed for Chadron. We stopped and drove Chadron State park. This was absolutely beautiful. My favorite state park in Ne. I can't describe it but want to go back. Soon. We stopped in Chadron and got our room for the night. Then we took off. We got to Toadstool Park about noon. The forest ranger assured us we could walk the mile tour easily. WRONG. We hadn't gone 100 yards when it was evident Bob couldn't do it. He went back and I started out. Noon. 94 degrees. The first quarter mile was easy. I found a rock with a little bench and shade. I thought "piece of cake". Then I couldn't find the trail. Eventually I realised I needed to follow the numbered posts. Then there was climbing. Hot. I came to the steep cliff. Scared me, but I made it past there. Then I needed shade. I could see it all around me, but there was no way to get to it. I finally climbed up off the trail and crawled under a rock where I got some relief from the sun. I got lost on post eight but finally got back to nine. Then there was the final leg of the walk. I do not recommend this for parents, children, grandparents or human beings for that matter. It terrified me !! You had 30 or 40 feet to walk on an impossible slope of rock and pebbles with nothing to hang on to. The angle was soo scary. My only alternative was to retrace my path, but I was too hot. I was shaking when I got through that. When I got to the bottom, I just wanted water. And air conditioning !!!! We had enough time to check out Fort Robinson Park but I was really disappointed with it. Compared to other state parks, this had NOTHING to see. Museums if you like that sort of thing. I like scenery!!! Then it was time to get back to Chadron and clean up. We went to a place called "Wrecker's" and had supper. We were there by 4:30 and by 5:00 you couldn't get a table. It was the only place in town that had the "Game". We sat with a real nice couple and had a great time.
Early the next morning we headed for Harrison. On the way, I turned off and we found the Nebraska National Forest. This too was beautiful !! I can't describe it. You would also need a high riding vehicle and drive very slow. Dirt roads again. From there we headed to Sowbelly Canyon. Not even on most maps. You first travel over about 5 miles of the roughest dirt rock roads imaginable, and then you start your decent. Narrow winding roads going down and down. Half way you come to Coffee Park. Out in the middle of nowhere. I still don't know how they got a mower in there to mow it!! Then we went on and on to the bottom and started the winding road up to the top. Near the top, you could see it. The forest fire from 2 years ago. How sad!! if you look real close you can see it on a couple of the pictures. I don't know how it missed the canyon !! From there we headed west.
Douglas Wyoming.... There is a reason for this short trip out of Nebraska. I own land in WY. Actually my brothers and I own land in Wyoming. Actually we don't. Long story. Long before I was born an Uncle of my Mothers gave her 3 or 4 lots in WY. Mom paid taxes. Mom died. Dad paid taxes. Dad died. Bud paid taxes. Bud died. Arvid paid taxes. Arvid researched and found out that the people who use the land ( but didn't build on it) kinda have it by squatter's rights. They have kept the weeds down, etc. We just drove the town and I picked the prettiest house in town and said "that was our lots". Worked for me !! We stayed the night and were on the road by 6:00 the next morning.
We skirted the Laramie Mountains on our way to Nebraska. Such pretty scenery !! We toured Scottsbluff and headed to Gering which is where you go to drive up Scottsbluff Monument. Three tunnels and a narrow road later you are on the top. That is where Bob hiked the .08 mile walk to a view. We just took our time. The scene was great !!! You could even see Chimney Rock in the distance !!
We toured several small towns on our next leg and eventually came to Chimney Rock. I don't even know if they are teaching school kids about it's significance during pioneer times. Then it was on to Courthouse Rock and Jail Rock. Courthouses in Ne. are built square, so you know which is which if you look. Guess Jail Rock was so named because it was next to Courthouse Rock????
Next we headed for Paxton, Ne. Keep in mind, we still haven't hit an interstate highway. We stop at Ole's. It is well known for it's animals. Stuffed. I am no fan of them, but was still impressed. If it has a head, it was there. That and the life sized polar bear. I was just amazed by the size of it.
From there we headed to Interstate 80 and headed towards home. We had one more stop to make. Fort McPherson National Cemetery. So solemn, so serene, and so humbling. We just walked at random. One thing we learned. If you saw a sprinkler come on in some area of the cemetery, be aware that it could come on anywhere. We got caught reading the stones in the MIA area. We both RAN...... Me one way, He another.
Then it was a long drive home. We were both surprised that we were home by 11:00. It was long day, we saw a lot but we didn't feel like we were rushed.
For those of you who think there is nothing to see in Nebraska, you are soooo wrong. You just need to take off, ask questions and be willing to take the lesser traveled road. You won't be disappointed. ( A four wheel drive vehicle is recommended.)

Funeral
When we left the church, we were surprised. Freedom Riders lined the sidewalk on both sides saluting the casket as it passed. Their bikes each with a flag flying on it, escorted the hearse to the cemetery. Some rode in front of the hearse and some rode behind it. These people are all vets and usually protect families of fallen soldiers from hecklers opposing the war. My sister-in-law told me that this is just something they do back home to honor all vets. It was a full military funeral with military casket bearers. The Freedom Riders also lined the road to the grave as we passed by. These "Riders" are bikers and they looked the part. Jeans, boots, beards and bandannas. Sounds weird? It wasn't. It was a very impressive and touching experience.
The police department in Norfolk is terrific. I don't know how many cars were at Uncle Myron's funeral, but there were at least 6 patrol cars at Harley's. All we had to do was half a block to HWY. 81 and then a few short blocks to the cemetery. The head patrol car goes straight down the middle of the highway and the procession is to do the same. No other cars can interfere or pass the procession. The officers with their cars parked across the lanes were all out, standing at attention and saluting until the procession passed.
We went straight to Aunt Eva's when we got into town. She was home alone and we had a nice talk. She was taking it pretty hard. Not a good time for her to be alone. She told us she is thinking of going to a nursing home, but can't make any big decisions until she has calmed down from this. I do hope she decides to go to one. She just isn't well enough to live alone and Rose can't really help her now. Rose has too much going on trying to help Sonja .
It was a long day and we are glad we are home.

Aunt Eva
This is the sixth person since July 4th that either Bob or I have known that has passed away. Seems like a large number to me.
